About Rick
I can start with the slightly clichéd "I fell in love with filmmaking as a kid in the 90s using my dad's prized Hi8 camcorder", because it’s true.
When I was eleven, I discovered that you could connect two VCRs together with a SCART cable and copy films from the local video shop. Naturally, I created a handwritten catalogue and started renting those copies out to friends at school for 50 pence a week. My mum and dad quickly shut that business down because what I was doing was “definitely illegal." In another timeline I could have invented Netflix. Possibly 🤔
I then moved on to making skate videos and silly sketches with my friends, which for some reason convinced me that filmmaking might actually be a viable career choice. In 1999, I left my hometown of Peebles and went to uni in Edinburgh, got a degree, then landed an editing internship at the post house Freakworks down in Leith, just as they were making the jump from Avid Media Composer to Final Cut Pro. I started editing and never stopped.
Five cities, three countries and over two decades later, I’ve met a lot of amazing people and I've worked on a lot of great projects: commercials, documentaries, narratives, sports, comedy, news, social campaigns, pharma, case studies, pitches, rips, and countless others.
Most recently I've directed and edited my first feature documentary, Better Than Kubrick,
and I'm a rostered editor at SILENTFACE here in New York City.
